The Institute for Comparative Studies of Culture was founded in 1954 with the help of a subsidy from the Harvard-Yenching Institute. It was the first comparative cultural studies institute in Japan. The purpose of the institute is to conduct comparative cultural studies in the humanities, sociology, and natural sciences, and to study and collect historical materials on Christianity and Christian culture in Japan.

Maruyama Masao Center for the History of Ideas was established in 2002 as an affiliate of the institute in response to the donation of the collection of books, manuscripts, notes and correspondence of the late Masao Maruyama, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo.
