In September 1998, Tokyo Woman's Christian University received a gift of some 18,000 publications and 8,200 manuscripts and notes from the family of Masao Maruyama. For the purpose of promoting the wide utilization of these valuable materials, and with the intent of becoming a hub for Masao Maruyama studies in Japan, the Maruyama Masao Center for the History of Ideas was established in 2002 as an affiliate to the Institute for Comparative Studies of Culture. In addition to organizing the Masao Maruyama Collection, the Center hosts lectures and reading groups, and issues publications.
The copyright to Masao Maruyama's writings were bequeathed to Tokyo Woman's Christian University in 2011. Through its activities, the Maruyama Masao Center for the History of Ideas looks forward to not only playing a central role in Masao Maruyama studies, but also to making a significant contribution to the advancement of studies in comparative philosophy.
